Baile Baleen, April 15, 2023
Baile Baleen is mostly a structured improvisation performance, with some set choreography. The movement has evolved out of our research into whale lives and hearts. During our eco-somatic process of creating this work, we explored both individual and collective sensory perceptions that guide our movement possibilities and aesthetics.
Our original sound score is by Bonni Ross who is our mama whale in the piece. Bonni included music and whispered poetry by dancers Eve Gradilla and Constance Clare-Newman.
The piece has 10 sections:
Ocean-hear the waves and birds, see seaweed flowing, fishes whispering.
Whale Heart-the biggest heart in the world, hear the slow pulsing, 37 beats a minute, blood flowing through and around chambers, valves. On organ shared with all mammals, hear the human heart enter.
Diving and Depth-Into the deep, whales swim, moan, sing.
Bubbles-preparing to breathe, they begin to rise to the surface.
Breaching-playful moments, jumping, turning, enjoying.
Family/Danger-parenting and teaching, watching and protecting
Percussion-communicating in patterns of clicks, whistles, calls, into a celebration
Fantasy-accessing the eternal, grounding into the deepest part of the earth, up into the starriest sky, connecting in freedom when all is love.
Whale Heart-returning to heartbeats, coming out of the center into separate beings.
Ocean-flowing away into quiet and rest, still gently connected.
Today our sound technician is Ernesto Mercado.
We thank Sacred Grounds at the UUCOD for allowing us to dance here again!
